Nearly nine months after the tragic death of three-year-old Kaden Young, Dufferin OPP has charged his mother in connection to his death.
On Thursday (Oct. 11), police charged 35-year-old Michelle Hanson with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
In a press release, OPP say it will not comment on specific details of the allegations to protect the integrity of the ensuing court process.
Hanson is scheduled to appear in Orangeville court on November 6.
“The OPP sympathizes with and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of Kaden Young on his tragic loss. We also remember and recognize the many community residents and visitors who gave of their time to search for Kaden during the aftermath of this tragic incident,” OPP stated in its release.
During the early morning hours of February 21, police say Hanson and Kaden were travelling in their minivan when it went past a road block on the 10th Line in Amaranth.
The van was pulled into the flooded Grand River. Hanson managed to escape the van with the toddler, but lost his grip in the raging water.
Hanson was rescued by emergency responders. Kaden’s body was found near Belwood Lake on April 21.
