Halton Region has reportedly achieved a 9% reduction in total homelessness.
This progress is part of a nationwide initiative led by the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH), with funding and support from the federal government’s $45-million Homelessness Reduction Innovation Fund (HRIF).
Launched in August 2025, Halton Region’s Halton Housing Stability Project aims to reduce homelessness by identifying early warning signs among people and families at risk of losing their housing and intervening before an eviction takes place.
The region has achieved a 9% reduction in total homelessness 14 months into the project’s 18-month timeline.
Halton is one of five communities across Canada to report measurable reductions in homelessness through their partnership with CAEH. Other participating communities include the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, St. Thomas-Elgin, Ottawa, and Prince Edward Island.
The reductions come as federal government data indicates homelessness has nearly doubled across Canada over the past eight years.
This summer, United Way Golden Horseshoe has reported that financial stress is at an all-time high across Halton.
Through HRIF, CAEH is testing a Model for Ending Homelessness that focuses on shifting community efforts from managing homelessness to preventing it and helping people move into permanent housing. The approach emphasizes collaboration among community partners, data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
“These early results show that not only is homelessness solvable, but there is a proven, adaptable approach any community can use to get there,” says Tim Richter, CAEH’s founder and president.
CAEH is now expanding its support to help more communities implement the model. Its services include free tools and resources, training, peer learning, and additional support tailored to local needs.
“In partnership with communities across the country, we’re changing how Canada responds to homelessness. To support that change, we have re-imagined how we work as well,” adds Richter. “Our new look embodies our bold leadership and mission to reverse the lethal trajectory of homelessness in Canada.”
