The Dufferin Detachment of the OPP is reminding residents that Emergency Preparedness Week takes place until May 9th, and encourages everyone to take the time to prepare for unexpected emergencies.
Dufferin County is no stranger to emergencies and severe weather events. From winter snow and ice storms, to flooding, fires, and extended power outages, our communities have experienced firsthand how quickly conditions can change. Being prepared ahead of time can help protect you, your family, and your property during these situations.
The Dufferin OPP encourages residents to:
• Create a household emergency plan
• Prepare or update a 72-hour emergency kit
• Ensure emergency contact information is current
• Stay informed through local weather updates and emergency alerts
Emergency preparedness is not only about individual readiness, it is also about supporting one another as a community. Residents are encouraged to speak with family members, neighbours, and friends about emergency planning and discuss how they can assist each other during emergencies. Checking in on vulnerable neighbours and having a communication plan in place can make a significant difference.
For emergency responders and community partners, emergency preparedness is something that is discussed, planned for, and practiced every day. The Dufferin OPP encourages families to make emergency preparedness part of their regular household conversations as well. Talking about what to do during emergencies, where to go, and how to communicate can help families respond more effectively during stressful situations.
Dufferin County has repeatedly shown the strength of its communities during difficult times. When emergencies occur, residents, municipal partners, emergency services, public works, hydro crews, volunteers, and community organizations come together to support one another and help keep our communities safe. That cooperation and teamwork are critical during challenging situations, but personal preparedness remains an important part of the overall response.
Emergency Preparedness Week serves as an important reminder that preparedness starts at home and within our communities. Taking simple steps today can make a significant difference tomorrow.
