According to Groves, the extension gives Caledon the time to work out the massive logistical and financial responsibilities of inheriting “2,300 lane kilometres” from Peel Region. Lane kilometres measure the total length of each individual lane of traffic and reflect the actual surface area the town must plow, pave and repair.
This transfer of regional roads — including major arteries like Airport Road, Highway 50, King Street and Coleraine Drive — is part of a broader provincial effort to “download” public works from the Region of Peel to local municipalities. While initially set for this year, provincial documents state the one-year delay will ensure a “cohesive transition” and avoid service disruptions.
