Sustainable Orangeville has introduced a new program aimed at making birdwatching more accessible for everyone.
Through the Birding Backpack program, Orangeville Public Library card holders can now borrow one of three backpacks from either the Mill Street or Alder Street branches.
Each backpack includes binoculars, a bird identification guide, and resources to help residents track and share sightings through platforms like eBird. By removing the cost barrier of purchasing quality binoculars, the program opens the door to a hobby that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy – including underserved and low-income community members.
The program also incorporates guidance from birdability.org, ensuring resources are accessible for residents with different needs. Backpacks can be borrowed for one week, with renewals available if there’s no waiting list.
Sustainable Orangeville hopes the initiative will inspire more people to connect with nature, discover local bird species, and contribute to conservation efforts – whether exploring a nearby conservation area or simply birdwatching in their own backyard.
