The Town of Halton Hills is reminding homeowners of a potential way to earn income.
An additional residential unit (ARU) is a self-contained dwelling unit located on the same lot or within the same building as a primary residence. They can take many different forms such as secondary suites, basement apartments, coach houses, granny-suites and more. ARUs make efficient use of existing infrastructure, preserve neighbourhood character and vitality through gentle densification, and can provide both financial and environmental benefits as well.
“Additional residential units are gentle density – an achievable and local response to our housing needs in Halton Hills,” says Halton Hills Mayor Anne Lawlor. “Whether it’s for family members or income purposes, creating additional dwellings on existing properties can make a lot of sense for the residents of Halton Hills.”
According to the Halton Hills Growth Tracking Model, 77% or Halton Hills Housing is low-density, meaning homes that are either detached or semi-detached. 10% of housing is medium-density (townhouses) and 13% is high-density (apartments). In 2024, the Town added 72 ARUs to the ARU Public Registry.
