Headwaters Health Care Centre (HHCC) is getting millions in funding following a recent announcement.
Sylvia Jones, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Dufferin-Caledon says $3.615 million will going towards essential infrastructure upgrades and repairs.
This investment is part of the provincial government’s Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF) Program, which aims to enhance the infrastructure of hospitals and community health facilities across Ontario. These funds will ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients, families, and caregivers.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is making record investments in our health care system to connect families across Dufferin-Caledon to the care they need, when they need it,” says MPP Jones. “Our investment in Headwaters Health Care Centre’s infrastructure will allow them to modernize and make critical upgrades, ensuring people can access high quality care, in the community, for years to come.”
As a 27-year-old facility, Headwaters Health Care Centre requires extensive repairs and renovations to uphold the highest care standards. This funding will partially support our multi-year Plant and Building Automation System Upgrade, supporting the hospital’s goals in its 2024-2029 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan. The work includes:
- Replacing end-of-life equipment
- Installation of a heat recovery chiller
- Upgrade of the Building Automation System
- Installation of a steam boiler to support food services and medical device reprocessing
- Implementing efficient water fixtures, LED retrofits
“Investing in these infrastructure upgrades is crucial for the future of Headwaters Health Care Centre,” says Cathy van Leipsig, Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer, Headwaters Health Care Centre. “By modernizing our systems, we’ll not only improve operational efficiency but also significantly reduce our energy consumption and operational costs. These upgrades will ensure a more sustainable and reliable facility, reinforcing our commitment to providing the highest standard of care to our community and to protecting our environment.”
Blackstone Energy Services has been selected as the development partner for this project. With over 20 years of experience in the healthcare sector, and an energy management partner to Headwaters Health Care Centre for over a decade, Blackstone will oversee the implementation of the planned improvements. Following a comprehensive engineering study, Phase 1 has begun with the installation of blackPAC™, a Distributed Energy Resource Management System that will provide real-time data on energy usage and help establish benchmarks for future energy management strategies.
“Headwaters Health Care Centre’s investment in energy-efficient infrastructure upgrades demonstrates an impressive commitment to resilience and to improved community health benefits,” says Tim Schneider, President, Blackstone Energy Services. “We are proud to partner on this project, which will deliver significant energy savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance patient and staff comfort. Moreover, the upgrades will also lower operating costs and improve system reliability, helping Headwaters meet and exceed regulatory standards while showcasing their dedication to sustainability.”
Upon completion of the phased project, the hospital will also see significant reductions in electricity, natural gas, and water consumption, overall lower energy costs and a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. These upgrades will also support the hospital in achieving its Energy Conservation and Demand Management (ECDM) targets by 2029.
