For the readers: Do you prefer physical or digital copies?
A report from Cornell University says that with books going digital with things like e-readers, small bookstores have seen a boost in sales. It sounds funny, but the digitization of books is helping the sales of physical copies!
The research team found that people use their e-readers to find books they might like and then search for physical copies in stores. A source like Google Books is seen as something that now serves as a search engine for heavy readers
Do you prefer reading on electronics or physical books?

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Parm Gill resigns from roles as Milton MPP, Ontario Cabinet Minister
Milton’s provincial representative is stepping down from his roles. The reason? He’s going federal! Gill will join Pierre Poilievre’s federal Conservative Party, and will be aiming for Milton MP Adam van Koeverden’s seat. The next election will happen, at the latest, on October 20th, 2025. It could always be called sooner, like the last federal election. Read more here…
Daily WTF – Kentucky Gas Station Has ‘Disco Party’ Button in Bathroom
If you ever head to Kentucky, either for some delicious fried chicken or elite college basketball, you might want to stop in at the HOP Shop in Verona. They claim to have the “coolest” washroom, fitted with a ‘Disco’ button. You’ll enter the washroom and notice a large red button that reads ‘DO NOT TOUCH’, and if you do, you’ll be treated to a disco ball, lights, and music. Check out the video here. Someone send this off to Petro Canada. Let’s make using a gas station washroom a fun experience, as opposed to the nightmare it tends to be… Read more here…
ICBC rejected 27% of personalized licence plate requests in 2023
A few weeks ago, we touched on the rejected vanity license plates of Ontario last year. British Columbia has released their list, noting that nearly 1/3 of all requests were rejected. These were due to a list of reasons that include: obscene or abusive language, sexually suggestive phrases and trademark violations, among other reasons. Some of those aren’t awful. We’ve got ‘YSO SLO’, ‘2FAS4U’, and ‘OMG MOV’. I want to talk about the person who requested ‘Exorcist’, but in the form of ‘XRCIST’. All I see when I read that is ‘Ex-Racist’, which is not necessarily something you want your license plate to read. Back to the drawing board for that one. Read more here…

How TikTok created a new accent – and why it might be the future of English
Entertainment and media have always changed the way we speak, either with the words we use or how we say the words themselves. A recent example I like to bring up is how a large number of toddlers in Canada grew up with British accents due to watching a lot of Peppa Pig. The latest example is the social media app, TikTok. With the videos becoming mainstream, and a lot of people becoming “influencers” (large scale and small scale), it seems people have developed speaking tendencies. The BBC says they include “uptalk” – a rising intonation on declarative sentences – and “vocal fry”: a soft creak as you speak. Pretty interesting! Read more here…
Austin Butler Says He Needed Dialect Coach to Remove His Elvis Accent
Speaking of accents, Austin Butler has publicly stated the obvious: he can’t quite let go of Elvis just yet. The actor had to hire a dialect coach to try and remove his Elvis accent for his newest project, ‘Masters of the Air’. He told Stephen Colbert about how he was all Elvis for three whole years, and he essentially became the King. It’s not like this is new news, but it’s funny to get confirmation on what everyone was thinking when listening to Butler during the press tour for Elvis. It’s not even like he’s the first actor to have this happen. Johnny Depp has had a faux-British accent for more than 20 years. We’ll see how Butler did at removing the Memphis-twang from his voice, especially with him in Dune 2 – set to be released in a few months. Not gonna lie, Space Warrior Elvis would be a blast. How could Taylor Swift get to the Super Bowl from her Eras Tour?
It’s not often the Kansas City Chiefs are underdogs, but they play the part well. Patrick Mahomes helped lead his team past the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, which meant he and, more importantly, Travis Kelce will be heading to the Super Bowl once again. Taylor Swift was on the field during the celebrations, sharing very public kisses with her boyfriend, Kelce. Thing is, the Super Bowl is on Sunday, February 11th in Las Vegas. The day before, Swift is expected to be in Japan for her Eras Tour. Many are wondering if she will suffer the 17-hour time difference and a 12-hour flight to appear in a very broadcast-able box suite and cheer on her boo. She would then have to immediately fly to Australia to continue her tour. The Athletic broke down how she could make that trek work, while not affecting her touring schedule. Read more here…

Stone says it hasn’t been a fun time for her, having nightmare experiences so far. Hey, if Sharon Stone of all people can suffer through the trials and tribulations of online dating, then so can you… She might just also have the benefit of being Sharon Stone. Read more here…
South Korea’s government asks people not to eat fried toothpicks
A new food trend has people deep frying toothpicks. They then cover them with seasoning, and they look comparable to fries. South Korea is taking action against this trend, saying the items have not been approved for consumption as food, and due to safety reasons, should not be eaten. I can’t believe I have to say this but if someone offers you a fried toothpick, say no! Read more here…
Will January never end? Why the first month feels like the longest, according to psychologists
I don’t know about you, but it feels like January has taken two months to finish. A lot of people believe this, which has led to the common phrase of ‘first month, worst month’. Unless it’s your birthday month, not many people enjoy January. Psychologists say the reason why January feels like it takes forever to end is simple: the holidays are over. January is one long reminder that the holly, jolly time of the year is done, and we’re now stuck in the cold, dark winter. All we have to look forward to is spending more money for Valentine’s Day (without getting a day off) before Family Day on February 19th. That’s roughly 50 days between New Year’s and the next stat holiday, which means it’s nothing but work in between. As much as Blue Monday is a marketing campaign for travel companies, there is some truth in it being a sad time of the year. Do you hate January? Let me know! Read more here…
