Do Your Homework – Try to learn as much as you can about the person you’re going to meet before your date. A simple online search may turn up some surprises. Having a conversation over the phone or video chat before an in-person date may give you a better feel for the person before that first meeting.
Be Skeptical – It’s much safer to for you to be cautious and not believe everything you’re told when dating online. Romance scammers prey on vulnerabilities. Don’t let your fantasies get the best of you.
Meet in a Public Place – Meet in a public place where other people will be. In the event you feel uncomfortable, there will be other people around who can help you. Meeting up in a private or remote location is risky. If your date pressures you to go back to your home or their home, end the date and leave.
Tell a Friend – Tell someone else about your date. Where you’re going, when you plan on coming home and who you’re meeting. Take your cell phone with you and consider having your friend check-in with you during the date.
Don’t Give out Too Much Personal Information – Always be careful about the amount of personal information you share. You control what information you give out and when. It’s advisable to not give out your home address on the first date. Keep your personal number secure and only for people you feel comfortable with. Also, it is imperative you understand how privacy settings work on social media, you may be sharing too much.
Stay Sober – Keep a clear mind. Alcohol and drugs can impair your judgment. Also keep in mind your date may not have the best intentions.
Arrange your own Transportation – Don’t rely on a ride from your date. If things don’t work out, you need to be in control of your ride so you can leave when you want.
Long Distance Meets – Long distance meets can pose special safety considerations. Check into your own room and keep your hotel information confidential. Arrange for your own transportation and don’t get into someone’s personal vehicle you don’t know.
