Mono deputy mayor John Creelman’s motion to formulate a traditional Indigenous land acknowledgement at the start of every Dufferin County council meeting garnered some dialogue.
Amaranth mayor, Bob Currie was puzzled by what was being acknowledged, claiming Dufferin was desolate before European colonizers arrived.
County warden Darren White answered by stating First Nation artifacts were discovered within Dufferin, proving it wasn’t barren land.
Creelman prefaced his motion by explaining its intention is to acknowledge Indigenous stewardship of the land, their historical and future contributions to it.
Council tasked staff with consulting with members of the local Indigenous community to formulate an accurate territory acknowledgement of the land now designated as Dufferin County.
