Taxi matters were back on Orangeville council’s agenda this week.
Back in November, Orangeville Taxi requested council to level what it thought was an unfair playing field after ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft came to town.
Council agreed to extend its taxi bylaw to regulate ride-sharing apps, lift the restrictions on the total number of plated issued within the town, remove restrictions on fleet colour schemes and overhead lightening, among other changes.
Councillor Lisa Post was in opposition to the new bylaw, namely because she thinks it’ll scare off Uber and Lyft.
Meanwhile mayor Sandy Brown was in favour of the change and thinks inviting Uber and Lyft into the conversation about regulation, will reach a consensus for all parties.
Council tasked staff to make the changes and form a new bylaw and council will hold a public meeting that’ll include feedback from taxi, limousine and transportation network companies in June.
