Mono council has given its first reading to a bylaw that would ban single-use plastic bags at retail checkouts.
Similar bans are already in place in municipalities across Canada, but there are none as of today in Ontario.
Last March, the Ontario government introduced Bill 82, that if passed, would require the elimination of the distribution and supply of single-use plastics in Ontario by 2025.
If Mono’s bylaw passes, it would become the first municipality in Ontario to ban single-use plastic bags. Retailers would have the option to offer customers recyclable paper bags for a fee, but the goal is to encourage people to use reusable bags.
Mono will consult with residents, businesses and other stakeholders on the bylaw.
