The Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL) is inviting residents to apply for volunteer positions on its Library Board.
They are seeking community-minded individuals interested in helping guide the direction of local library services for the 2027–2030 term.
The Library Board plays an important role in shaping the future of the Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL). Members provide governance, establish strategic priorities, approve policies, oversee finances, and help ensure services continue to reflect the needs of the community.
“You don’t need to have a specific background or set of qualifications to contribute to the Library Board,” says Alice Strachan, Chair of the Halton Hills Public Library Board. “Everyone brings valuable skills and perspectives, and one of the most important things you can bring is curiosity. It’s about asking thoughtful questions, sharing your perspective and being open to learning from others. Those different perspectives are incredibly important in building a Board that truly represents our community.”
Previous board experience or a background in libraries is not required. The library welcomes applicants with professional, entrepreneurial, public sector, volunteer, and lived experiences.
Individuals with experience in finance, business strategy, leadership, governance, accessibility, community development, technology and partnerships are encouraged to consider applying. The library also emphasizes the importance of curiosity, collaboration, a willingness to learn, and an interest in contributing to the community.
Serving on the board involves about six to 10 hours per month, including meeting preparation and occasional library events. The board generally meets eight to nine times each year.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Reside in Halton Hills
- Not be employed by the Halton Hills Public Library or the Town of Halton Hills
Following the 2026 municipal election, Town of Halton Hills Council will appoint community members to the Library Board for the upcoming term.
