As frigid temperatures grip Dufferin and Caledon, homeowners are being urged to take immediate steps to prevent costly damage from frozen and burst pipes.
Key precautions include winterizing irrigation systems, turning off outdoor water taps, and sealing any drafts near windows or foundations where cold air can reach plumbing.
For added protection during deep freezes, experts suggest opening cabinet doors to circulate warm air around indoor pipes and leaving a single faucet on a pencil-thin trickle to keep water moving.
If you plan to head out of town, it is vital to shut off your main water valve and drain the lines to ensure your home remains safe while you’re away.
Residents who suspect a pipe has already frozen should apply gentle heat with a hairdryer – but avoid using open flames, which pose a severe fire hazard.
