An 80-year-old Brampton driver has been charged after a tow operator was struck while working at the scene of a broken-down vehicle in Caledon.
Caledon OPP say officers were responding to a call on Mayfield Road near Robertson Davis Drive around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th, when a local tow operator was removing a disabled vehicle from the roadway. Police had blocked a live lane of traffic and emergency lights were activated, while the tow operator was wearing high-visibility reflective gear.
Despite these safety measures, investigators say a passing vehicle failed to move over and struck the tow operator’s arm. The operator suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.
Following an investigation, the driver was charged with:
- Careless driving
- Fail to slow down and proceed with caution for tow truck
Caledon OPP are reminding motorists that Ontario’s move-over law requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when approaching stopped emergency vehicles, including police, fire, ambulance, and tow trucks. Where a roadway has two or more lanes, drivers must move into another lane if it can be done safely.
