Dufferin OPP are advising snowmobile enthusiasts that all local snowmobile trails maintained by the Dufferin Drift Busters, the Orangeville Snowmobile Club, and the Hillsburgh Snow Roamers remain closed at this time.
Unseasonably warm temperatures and rainfall during this typical January thaw have taken a toll on local trail systems. As a result, riders are asked to stay off the trails until colder temperatures return and additional snowfall allows groomer operators the time needed to properly pack and prepare the trails. Extended periods of cold weather are also required for waterways, swamps, and low-lying areas to freeze safely.
Riding on closed trails can cause significant damage, delay trail openings, and create dangerous conditions for both riders and volunteers. Snowmobilers are reminded that accessing the OFSC trail network while trails are closed is an offence under the Trespass to Property Act. In addition, damage to winter crops beneath the snow may constitute mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada. These actions place riders at risk and can lead to trail closures by affected landowners, impacting the entire snowmobiling community.
Local snowmobile clubs continue to work tirelessly to maintain and improve the trail network and appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation.
