The Milton Public Library (MPL) will eliminate overdue fines on children’s and teen materials beginning in the new year.
Starting January 2nd, this change will apply to all children’s and teen books and audio-visual materials, including DVDs. In addition, any existing overdue fines on these items will be cleared, giving families a fresh start. Other charges, such as replacement costs, processing fees for lost items, and fees for non-pickup of holds, will still apply. Overdue fees will also continue for adult materials, video games, and items from the Library of Things collection.
Library officials say the decision reflects feedback from the community, with families asking for fewer obstacles and greater access to library resources for children and teens.
“This initiative reinforces MPL’s commitment to literacy, equity, and reducing barriers to access,” says Sarah Douglas-Murray, CEO and Chief Librarian. “We want young readers and their families to borrow freely, read widely, and engage with the library without worrying about overdue fines.”
To prepare for the change, patrons are encouraged to review their accounts and settle any outstanding charges other than overdue fines before January 2026. Accounts can be reviewed online through My Account or Chat with a Librarian at beinspired.ca, by calling 905-875-2665, or by visiting any Milton Public Library branch.
Milton Public Library thanked the community, Library Board, and the Town of Milton for their continued support as the library works to create a more accessible and inclusive environment for all residents.
