Halton Region once again leads the way in community safety, posting the lowest Overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) among Ontario’s “Big 12” police jurisdictions, according to Statistics Canada’s latest Police-reported crime statistics in Canada, 2024 report.
The findings, released in July, were presented at this week’s Halton Police Board meeting.
For the 17th straight year, Halton also recorded the lowest Violent and Non-Violent CSI, as well as the lowest overall crime, violent crime, and non-violent crime rates among Ontario’s largest municipalities. Chief of Police Stephen Tanner credited the results to ongoing efforts to combat priority issues like home invasions, auto theft, and organized crime.
“We will continue to deploy resources and work closely with our partners to hold offenders accountable and ensure community safety,” says Tanner.
New local data shows those efforts are having an impact. From January to June 2025, overall crime in Halton dropped 11.7% per 100,000 residents. Auto thefts decreased 32%, break and enters were down 26%, and property crimes overall fell nearly 16% compared to the same period in 2024. Fraud cases also dropped 13%, while incidents of mischief declined by 21%.
The Halton Regional Police Service also reported improvements in solving crime, with its weighted clearance rate climbing to 37.8%, up more than 3% from last year. Police attribute the increase to more personnel, enhanced collaboration with stakeholders, and stronger community engagement.
Halton Police Board Chair Jeff Knoll praised the region’s ongoing commitment to safety but stressed the need to stay vigilant.
“Halton’s strong safety record reflects the combined efforts of residents, police, governments, and community partners. But crime remains too high, and we must not become complacent.”
