The province has ordered the Dufferin-Peel Catholic board to allow Every Child Matters flags to be raised next week, rolling back part of a controversial flag policy that bans most displays.
The directive comes ahead of Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours Indigenous children who attended residential schools and highlights the intergenerational impacts of the system. The change means the flag can be flown outside board buildings and displayed inside schools that day.
In January, board trustees voted to uphold a flag policy allowing only country, provincial and board flags outside buildings, with similar restrictions inside schools.
