A Milton student is celebrating national recognition for their groundbreaking science project.
Lohitaksh, a Grade 8 student at Bruce Trail Public School, earned three prestigious awards at the 2025 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), held back in June in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Their project, Q-CaDD: Accelerating In Silico Methodologies with Quantum Computation and Machine Learning for EGFR, won The Actuarial Foundation of Canada Award, an Excellence Award – Silver, and a Western University Entrance Scholarship.
The CWSF is Canada’s largest youth STEM competition, bringing together top students from across the country to present their research, compete for awards, and share innovations. Lohitaksh was one of 11 Halton District School Board students to compete this year, with the group collectively bringing home an impressive 40 awards across a variety of categories.
Other standout projects from HDSB students included AI-powered ecological monitoring, wildfire detection systems, humanoid robotics, and medical hydrogel advancements. The strong showing reflects the board’s emphasis on fostering curiosity, encouraging innovation, and giving students the tools to connect classroom learning to real-world challenges.
“The Halton District School Board is incredibly proud of our students, not only for their exceptional achievements at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, but for the creativity, commitment and innovative thinking they have demonstrated through their projects,” says Curtis Ennis, Director of Education for the HDSB. “These accomplishments reflect the outstanding talent of our students in STEM and the critical role this learning plays in sparking curiosity and innovation. In alignment with our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, students are connecting what they learn to real-world challenges – equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
