Two residents from Halton were among 11 individuals arrested during a demonstration in downtown Toronto over the weekend.
On the afternoon of Saturday, July 19th, near Spadina Avenue and Front Street West, Toronto Police say a large group gathered and refused to follow lawful orders to keep the demonstration moving. Protesters reportedly blocked an intersection, were asked to disperse, and then became confrontational, with some allegedly assaulting officers during efforts to restore order.
The following are now facing charges from Toronto Police:
- 43-year-old Deirdre Cahill of Oakville – Mischief Interfere with Property
- 28-year-old Salim Elewa of Burlington – Assault Peace Officer, Cause Disturbance, Mischief Interfere with Property
- 30-year-old Ghassan Abulawi of Toronto – Obstruct Peace Officer, Fail to Comply Undertaking
- 28-year-old Anna Ellergodt of Toronto – Obstruct Peace Officer, Assault Peace Officer
- 32-year-old Yusif Alizada of Toronto – Obstruct Peace Officer, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Carry Concealed Weapon
- 28-year-old Nour Abu-Ali of Mississauga – Obstruct Peace Officer
- 38-year-old Thomas Butko of Georgina – Two counts of Assault Peace Officer
- 26-year-old Adham Diabas of Brampton – Obstruct Peace Officer
- 47-year-old Leslie Solomonian of Toronto – Obstruct Peace Officer
- 23-year-old Jamiel Nasser of Windsor – Obstruct Peace Officer, Assault Peace Officer
Court appearances for the accused are scheduled to take place in Toronto throughout September.
