At its upcoming meeting, Milton Town Council will discuss taking the first steps toward building a long-envisioned Civic Precinct.
This would be a pedestrian-focused town square designed to serve as a vibrant social and cultural hub in downtown Milton for generations to come.
The proposed Civic Precinct would transform the area between Town Hall and Main Street East into a walkable gathering place, bordered by restaurants, cafés, and shops. It would also involve relocating existing municipal parking and creating space for flexible public use.
“Multiple Milton Town Councils have affirmed the Civic Precinct as a project of strategic significance,” says Andy Scott, Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives. “The precinct responds to our community’s desire for downtown placemaking and continues to position Milton as A Place of Possibility.”
The project, shaped by public input, is anchored by five guiding objectives:
- Establishing a strong civic presence
- Preserving and building on downtown’s heritage
- Creating a lively, inclusive public realm
- Ensuring walkability and community interaction
- Supporting placemaking for all residents
Phased Development Plan:
- Phase 1 (Now–2031) – Develop the central public space, enhance Mary Street for pedestrian use during events, and allow Main Street businesses to incorporate the square into their storefront plans.
- Phase 2 (2031–2045) – Support private development on the precinct’s east and west sides, while reducing municipal parking as new spaces open nearby.
- Phase 3 (2045–2051) – Complete the transition to a fully walkable downtown if all municipal parking can be relocated.
To support the transformation, Milton has already secured a replacement parking site on Millside Drive. Free parking will remain in effect, with changes rolled out incrementally.
If the plan is approved, the Town will begin a public design process in 2025, with opportunities for residents to provide input.
