Halton Region Public Health has confirmed a case of measles and is warning of a potential public exposure.
They’re notifying residents who may have visited the Medical Building located at 3075 Hospital Gate in Oakville on Thursday, June 12th, between 2:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., that they may have been exposed to the virus.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily through the air. Public Health is urging individuals who were at the location during the exposure window to check their immunization status. Two doses of the measles vaccine are recommended for anyone born on or after January 1st, 1970.
Those most at risk (infants under one year, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems) should contact Halton Region Public Health or their health care provider immediately. Anyone showing symptoms such as fever, cough, red eyes, or a blotchy rash should also seek medical advice and call ahead before visiting a clinic or hospital.
“Measles is a serious disease that can be prevented with a safe and effective vaccine,” says Dr. Deepika Lobo, Halton’s Medical Officer of Health. “I encourage all residents to ensure their immunizations are up to date, especially children who may have missed routine shots during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
