Students from the Halton District School Board (HDSB) showcased their talents at the Skills Ontario Competition held this month.
The annual event gives students the chance to demonstrate their abilities while promoting careers in the skilled trades. For secondary students, the competition also serves as a qualifier for the Skills Canada National Competition later this month.
On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, students went to the Toronto Congress Centre and came home with an impressive 27 awards across a variety of skilled trades and technological challenges.
Gold Medal Winners:
- Jacob Bondarenko, Grade 12, Nelson High School – Auto Collision Repair
- Sabina Armstrong, Grade 12, Nelson High School – Auto Painting
- Adam Scruby, Grade 11, Aldershot School – Mechanical CAD
- Bella Zhao and Tegan Tao, Grade 11, Garth Webb Secondary School – 2D Character Animation
- Neel Shah, Grade 10, Abbey Park High School – IT Network Systems Administration
- Miles D, Charley D, Hannah P and Chloe R, Grades 4-6, Maplehurst Public School – Lego Mechanical Engineering
- Melody Z, Aidan S, Bonnie C and Max T, Grades 7-8, Post’s Corners Public School – Technology
Silver Medal Winners:
- Jessica Wang, Grade 11, Garth Webb Secondary School – Computer Aided Manufacturing
- Manuthi R, Paige W, Agastya V and Elsa H, Grades 4-6, Stewarttown Middle School – Character Animation
Bronze Medal Winners:
- Sienna Mason, Grade 11, Garth Webb Secondary School – Fashion Design
- Neng Li, Grade 12, Abbey Park High School – Coding
- Bronwyn Elms and Suhana Khatri, Grade 11, Abbey Park High School – TV and Video Production
- Abu-Ubaidah A, Noel C, Mrinal G, Aryan D, Grades 7-8, Sam Sherratt Public School – Vex IQ Robotics

As students apply their knowledge to practical challenges, they develop essential skills and explore meaningful career opportunities in skilled trades and technology.
