The Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising residents that road load restrictions of 5 tonnes per axle have been enacted on most county-maintained roads in Dufferin County. These restrictions are necessary to protect the integrity of road infrastructure during the spring thaw, a period when fluctuating temperatures and increased moisture make road surfaces more susceptible to damage.
The 5-tonne per axle weight limit applies to a majority of Dufferin County roads. These restrictions are aimed at minimizing wear and tear on roads, which are more vulnerable during the spring thaw. The goal is to preserve the quality of roadways and ensure the safety of all road users.
While the load restrictions apply to most county roads, there are some exemptions where heavier traffic is permitted. The following roads will remain open to vehicles exceeding the 5-tonne per axle limit:
- County Road 3
- County Road 24/25/109/124
- County Road 7 (from Highway 10 to 5 Sideroad Mono)
- County Road 11 (from County Road 109 to Shannon Court Amaranth)
- County Road 17 (from County Road 124 to 4th Line Melancthon)
The road load restrictions are in effect from March 1, 2025, to May 15, 2025.
- The 5-tonne per axle weight limit applies to most Dufferin County roads, with the listed exemptions.
- Vehicles carrying more than 5 tonnes per axle are prohibited from using restricted roads.
- Fines may be issued to vehicles found in violation of the load restrictions.
The Dufferin County OPP and Dufferin County Public Works Department urge all residents and businesses to be mindful of these restrictions and ensure compliance.
Members of the Dufferin OPP are committed to ensuring public safety through proactive and innovative policing in partnership with the community.
