If you notice something different with your Hydro bill in the next couple of months, don’t worry!
The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has accepted an assurance of voluntary compliance from Orangeville Hydro Limited.
Brian Hewson, Vice President of Consumer Protection with the OEB, says this is due to a billing error that overcharged customers for the past 4 years.
“The company took ownership of the issue, and is making sure that it’s billing system is accurate and correct” Hewson maintained.
“That is the foundation of trust [for] customers. You [have] to make sure your billing is accurate, and [that] customers are comfortable with that,” he continued.
The billing error was relatively small, and the refund will total around $18 dollars per customer over the 4 year period.
“Orangeville Hydro took steps right away to fix the issue, and then came to an agreement with us on the appropriate way to respond to customers,” said Hewson.
In addition to the repayment, Hewson says Orangeville Hydro will be making a voluntary payment of $5000 to OEB in recognition of the fact they had not followed the rules.
The customer overcharge was based entirely on computational errors, and no malicious intent was taken by Orangeville Hydro in this mistake.
