You’ll likely need the snow shovel in the coming days as the warm temperatures and rain will quickly turn into frigid air and snow.
The Milton Fire Department wants you to know that you should shovel the snow around any nearby fire hydrants. Fire Chief Peter Gatto says doing so could save lives.
He says the first truck on the scene would need to allocate resources at hand. If they’re unable to find a hydrant nearby because of snow, then the next truck on the scene would likely be tasked with finding one and shovelling it out. That’s because the trucks are equipped with enough water to fight an initial blaze, but they tap into the hydrants for additional support. If you were to shovel around the hydrants, you’d save time and resources that could be used to fight a house fire, potentially saving lives.
Chief Gatto wants residents to be aware of a new campaign that is being used. It’s about telling residents to close the doors to the house once they leave a house fire. That’s because fires need oxygen to breathe. While closing the front door won’t restrict the airflow to the fire, it will definitely limit the amount of oxygen available to the fire. If the door is left open, you run the risk of wind blowing into the house, increasing the size of the fire almost immediately.
Great reminder for #MiltonON residents!
If you have a fire hydrant on your property or see one in your neighbourhood covered in snow, please help us out by keeping it clear of snow and ice. https://t.co/OBHFBGfKU4
