How do you get hired by the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS)?
That’s the latest question for ‘Ask a Cop’. HRPS Constable and Media Relations Officer Ryan Anderson says they’re currently taking applications for new and experienced officers.
He says that he’s not entirely sure why the Halton Police prefers to hire new officers over experienced officers, but he chalks it up to the service likely wanting homegrown employees over others. Every once in a while, like currently, the HRPS will put out the call asking for veteran officers to apply to the force.
You may be wondering what you have to do to even become a new officer. Constable Anderson says you’ll need to take part in physical and written tests to receive an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Certificate. Once you get that certificate, you’ll need to meet other criteria.
Constable Anderson adds that there is just one police academy in all of Ontario. The Ontario Police College is located in Aylmer, just south of London. He says it’s located in what might be an old air force base in “the middle of nowhere.”
Each police service in the province gets a certain amount of seats at the college, meaning only a certain amount of hirings from each one can go for the duration of the training. He says that it’s mostly OPP, Toronto, and Peel trainees, but because Halton is a growing community, we tend to have our fair share in attendance.
Curious about salary? Have a listen:
Constable Anderson ends the interview by stressing that the job of a police officer is not light work. It is a career that involves you potentially putting your life on the line, and you will be forced to work any and all hours of the week in all kinds of weather. Applicants should put thought into what they’re applying for, and he recommends that they meet with the HRPS Recruiting Unit to speak with an advisor.
