Mono council is condemning a controversial provincial bill it says “undermines the power of conservation authorities to do their jobs”.
Nestled inside Bill 229, is a change that’ll allow the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to issue permits to developers on behalf of conservation authorities in hazardous areas.
In a letter issued to the province, Mono council says “We value the services provided – all services but in particular the assistance in making planning decisions that protect our drinking water, that protect us from developing in flood-prone areas and that protect our wetlands and
aquifers.”
Shelburne council also object to bill 229 with a letter of its own to the province.
The province says the new rules would “increase accountability, consistency and transparency by streamlining the land use planning process.”
